MedTech Europe has issued an urgent appeal to European policymakers, urging the exemption of medical technologies from any trade tariffs or export restrictions. This move comes as the European Commission concludes its public consultation on a list of EU countermeasures targeting both imports from and exports to the United States, potentially leading to a second package of retaliatory measures.
In a statement on its website, MedTech Europe emphasized the critical need for such exemptions, stating, “Action is needed now to protect patients and preserve access to critical healthcare solutions.” The organization also called for medical technologies to be prioritized in a “Zero for Zero” tariff agreement on industrial goods or any negotiated settlement aimed at eliminating tariffs across the Atlantic.
A key concern highlighted by MedTech Europe is the potential impact of trade disruptions on the sector. The proposed EU countermeasures include over 800 trade codes related to medical technologies, covering not only finished products but also core components essential for medical devices and diagnostics. As the organization noted, “The medical technology sector is a strategic driver of Europe’s economic strength and industrial resilience. Trade disruptions and tariffs risk undermining access to these crucial technologies.”
This appeal aligns with similar efforts in the United States. Over a month ago, Scott Whitaker, CEO of AdvaMed, testified before the Senate Finance Committee, advocating for tariff exemptions for the medical device industry. Whitaker proposed a “zero-for-zero” tariff model to safeguard the medical technology supply chain, explaining, “Historically, this has been the position for medical technology,” and urging its adoption in country-by-country negotiations.
